Deadline extended: In response to demands for an extension of deadline in the midst of holiday season, we have decided to extend the submission deadline for “Differentiating Sound Studies: Politics of Sound and Listening” until 7 January 2022, 23:59 (UTC+9). Those who have already submitted their abstracts may revise their submissions until the new deadline, if necessary.
We invite proposals on any topics in the area of sound studies. We are particularly interested in themes relating to various ways in which sound makes differences in society and culture. How do class/stratum, gender/sexuality, and generational/regional differences manifest themselves via sound? What do they sound like? In relation to these questions, we also interrogate how techniques of listening are mediated by technology today, and what that relationship brings to the world.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
- Sound and society/culture
- Sound and class/stratum
- Sound and gender/sexuality
- Sound and generational/regional differences
- Sound and technology
- Any topics related to sound studies
We welcome proposals from scholars and practitioners as well as early-career researchers and graduate students working in all musicological disciplines.
Categories of Presentation:
- Free Paper: Each paper is given 20 minutes for presentation, followed by 10 minutes of discussion.
- Panel Presentation: Each panel presentation will be a 90/120-minute session with three to five papers, including time for discussion.
An individual may submit no more than one proposal in each category.
The maximum length of abstracts is 250 words for each individual abstract and panel description.
Abstracts must be written in English and submitted via the online submission system by 31 December 2021 7 January 2022. The system will remain open until 31 December 2021 7 January 2022, 23:59 (UTC+9). For any enquiries, please contact us at rethinking.sound@gmail.com.
